The Carlton Martello Tower, now a national historical site, was built in 1813 to protect the port from possible U.S. attacks. The teacher on top of the hill had many uses from time to time in the 19th century and again during the two world wars.
In World War II, they served as headquarters for the anti-aircraft defense and fire fighting area. (A two-storey steel structure and concrete structure was added for this purpose.)
Today, the tower houses an exhibition of 18th-century military life with evidence in historical uniform. Rising above its surroundings, the tower is a magnificent attraction for spectacular views of the city, harbor and beyond across the Bay of Fundy.
