St. John's Market is Canada's oldest farmer's market, and the long, historic building is filled with local vendors selling food, handicrafts and tourist souvenirs. Open-air markets prompted the creation of this market building in 1876, and survived the city's biggest fire the following year.
Curved rafters indicate the marginal role of St. John in the shipbuilding industry. A daily bell rings to celebrate the beginning and end of the business day, although the market closes on Sunday.
