One of the more unusual things to see in Genoa is the beautiful Campo Santo or Cimitero di Staglieno, among the most famous cemeteries in Italy.

Located a little way north along the Bisagno valley, it is accessible by car or bus from the city. Its terraces of arcades almost overflowing with elaborate stone monuments, the cemetery is a must-see for anyone who loves Art Nouveau sculpture and decoration.

At the top, in the Boschetto dei Mille, is the tomb of Giuseppe Mazzini, Italy's hero of independence and a Genoa native.
