Gastown is the old part of Vancouver, and the original city center name “Gassi” was named after a sailor from Yorkshire, but it became called Vancouver in 1886.
Gastown was destroyed by a fire in the same year, but was quickly rebuilt and deteriorated in the following years. Gastown was completely revived in 1960 and today is the center of art, food, fashion and entertainment in Vancouver.
As an area with a national history, its buildings are filled with shops, traditional boutiques, innovative restaurants, ancient and modern art and a vibrant entertainment atmosphere.
