Cimiez Hill is the Roman city cradle. In ancient times, "Cemenelum" was a city in its own right, rival of "Nikaïa" the Greek located by the sea. Today, it is one of the wealthy neighborhoods of Nice both residential and including many buildings historic.
There is the 16th century Franciscan monks' church and the Cimiez monastery, surrounded by a cemetery where the painters Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy are buried, as well as the 1937 Nobel literature prize winner, Roger Martin du Gard.
The gardens of the monastery which offer a magnificent view of the city and the sea are also worth a visit, as well as the Roman ruins with arenas, amphitheater, baths and early Christian basilica.
Finally, there are several palaces dating back to the Belle Epoque, including the luxurious Regina Hotel which housed Queen Victoria and its courtyard.
