The Aga Khan Mausoleum, located 2.5 miles from Aswan Train Station, was built by Muhammad Shah, known as Aga Khan III. He was the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili community in India, and Imam 48 in 1885, and was one of the richest men in the world.
Aga Khan was suffering from rheumatism and orthopedic pain, and his friend advised him to travel to Aswan in the hope of recovery; Absolutely from his illness, he decided to visit Aswan every winter, then built a villa and also a cemetery to commemorate his recovery in this place and bury him after his death.
The mausoleum is built of pink granite and resembles the Fatimid cemeteries in Cairo. It is located near the monastery of St. Simeon on the West Bank in Aswan.
Aga Khan's wife continued to visit the shrine after her husband's death and recommended placing flowers on the grave every day.When she died she was buried with her husband.The shrine attracts many Ismaili pilgrims and visitors from all over the world.It is a prominent landmark in Aswan.
