Mamucium was a Roman fort founded in 79 AD, also known as Mancunium. Mamucium marked the first settlement of the Manchester area and was used in medieval times for farming purposes.
During the Industrial Revolution, the fort was levelled in order to progress local industry. Today, the ruins of the fort are still visible, and well worth a visit. Here you can see the layout of the civilian settlement that grew around the fort in Roman times.
This is a fascinating look at the earliest incarnation of Manchester, and a great opportunity to learn more about Roman Britain.
