The bustling city of Trabzon is a large coastal city surrounded by the eastern peaks of the Pontic Mountains that extend along the coast.
Perhaps it was established in the early eighth century BC by Greek settlers and quickly flourished as part of the trade caravan route between Persia and the Mediterranean.
The main attraction is the Hagia Sophia Museum (Hagia Sophia Church), and possibly built by Emperor Alexius Comnenus shortly after his arrival in Trabzon from Constantinople (modern Istanbul) in 1204
